OUR MASTER WOODMAKER
Mohamed Saber Shehata

Crafting Careers

Our vocational training center was set up so that we could teach young men who had no schooling, a trade that could sustain them and their families. Two prime examples are our wood and carpet weaving shop.

In our wood shop, the men learn how to make cupboards, doors, desks and pretty much anything made out of wood, including Under the Nile Veggie Crates, pencil boxes, toolboxes and the carpet looms.

I even recall hearing that our toolboxes are often seen along side the farm’s handy man as he fixes leaky faucets.

OUR MASTER WEAVERS

DID YOU KNOW that our rugs are all made with left over scraps from our clothing production?

It’s just another way we strive to achieve our goal of producing ZERO waste.

Our beautiful hand loomed rugs are made with precision and dedication from our Master Weavers who spend days making just one rug.

(The looms that are used to hand weave our rugs are actually made right at our vocational training center!)

I remember the first time I saw these rugs being made 25 years ago. They were only being made so that the factory wouldn’t have to throw away their scraps. The rugs were used as car seat covers (which I enjoyed being picked up in, because of the bright colors) and to keep house floors warm in the winter. I loved these rugs from the moment I saw them…but as a baby company I had no idea how I would sell them. So without thinking, I brought a few back with me for my own home and they were immediately loved by all my friends, who insisted I make them one or two. The rest, as they say, is history. We started to sell these rugs as play mats and they quickly became customer favorites.

MEET WAEL SAYED ABDEL LATIF

INTRODUCING ONE OF OUR MASTER RUG WEAVERS

If you ever happen to wander by the rug weaving floor of our factory, you'll find Wael seriously engaged in his work.  He is 32 years old and learned how to weave rugs 6 years ago from the department head Am Mahmoud al Dashur who has finally decided to retire.

I asked Wael what he liked best about weaving our rugs, to which he replied his favorite part is seeing how the carpets grow from nothing. And, believe it or not… his favorite color is white! When I asked him if he had a rug in his own home, he responded, “No… because I want Under the Nile to have all the rugs,” and smiles for a moment before continuing, “Thank you for reminding me, I will pick one out soon.”
