When you Google 'ethical manufacturing', this is what comes up:
"A holistic approach to the manufacturing process that focuses on good health for all involved. Ethical businesses care about every part and every facet of their company. From production to the customer, ethical businesses manufacture safe products safely."
This is true.
Yet, I would argue that ethical clothing manufacturing is really a business philosophy. That's our mentality at Under The Nile, starting with the simple principle of mutual respect. We speak to everyone in the same way that he or she would like to be the treated. It doesn't matter whether the position is a factory custodian or factory manager - we value their contribution.
Soha, who is the factory go to person to run fast important errands up and down the factory floors, greets me with a big smile upon every visit, waiting for me to get out of the car with my 20 pound bright colored bag so she can swiftly carry it up four flights of stairs for me. I smile back with gratitude.
ETHICAL MANUFACTURING
means everyone has the same opportunities, regardless if you are a man or a woman, and that fair wages are standard- not asked for
To me, ethical manufacturing means that all of our workers have the right to work in a clean, safe, and healthy work place. Most importantly, it means that we all respect each other's viewpoints and ideas so that we can all work towards achieving our common goals together.
